Opera Looks Back to Radio Plays to Create Immersive Experience

A Tempo this Saturday (12/9 at 7 pm) looks at a recent digital opera production that doesn’t rely on video.

When mezzo-soprano Eve Gigliotti decided to adapt the play No One is Forgotten by Winter Miller into an opera during the pandemic, she teamed up with composers Paola Prestini and Sxip Shirley and with Miller for the libretto. But instead of making a video production, as many were creating at that time, they chose to use audio to create an immersive experience. Combining techniques from the time-honored radio play with new acoustic technologies, they created their opera, which was co-produced by Dallas Opera and released this past Fall. A Tempo host Rachel Katz interviews Gigliotti on this week’s program about the idea for the production and some of the process used in its creation.

The program also includes a chat with Opera America President and CEO Marc Scorca about its 2023 Digital Excellence in Opera awards, in which Opera Philadelphia’s production of Svadba, co-produced with Boston Lyric Opera, won the top prize in the “Artistic Creation Category.”
