Two years ago the Los Angeles Philharmonic teamed up with Deaf West Theatre to create a semi-staged production of Beethoven’s Fidelio, pairing a singer and an actor, using sign language, to portray each character. The production is being revived this month and then taken on tour to Europe. A Tempo host Rachel Katz speaks with Deaf West Artistic Director DJ Kurs and LA Phil Chief Content Officer Meghan Umber about creating the production and how it helped open up opera to a broader audience.
