Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center's New Music Director Reaches Out to Engage Audiences

A Tempo this Saturday (7/20) features an interview with Jonathon Heyward, the new music director of the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center.

Jonathon Heyward, the new Music Director of the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center (formerly the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra) is kicking off this year's season with a crowd-sourced "Symphony of Choice" concert, just one of the ways he is seeking to create more audience engagement. The series includes a mix of traditional orchestral favorites by Bach, Schumann and Beethoven, and also several pre-concert discussions looking at the interrelationship between the arts and wellness. A Tempo host Rachel Katz chats with Heyward about these initiatives and his thoughts on making classical music more accessible. This year's festival runs July 20 - August 10.

This episode also features an interview with John Calkins, founder and artistic director of New Jersey Lyric Opera, about its second Opera Festival at Mercer County Community College's Kelsey Theatre, which runs July 27-29.
