New York Philharmonic Series Explores African Influences on Music, Fashion, and Art

A Tempo takes a look at the NY Philharmonic’s Afromodernism series, which includes a concert featuring a cello concerto by flutist and composer Nathalie Joachim exploring themes of African fashion.

The New York Philharmonic launches its series Afromodernism: Music of the African Diaspora series Oct. 17 and 18 with a concert of music featuring works by Black artists past and present. The series explores the how the arts and cultures of contemporary Africa and the African diaspora have influenced the arts, including music and fashion. A Tempo host Rachel Katz speaks with flutist and composer Nathalie Joachim, whose cello concert included in these concerts drew inspiration from African fashion, including Black Dandyism, and means of self-expression in the African disapora.

The NY Philharmonic series also includes a Young People's Concert called "The Future is Unity" and collaborations with other organizations around New York City.
