Opera Company Seeks to Make Productions Accessible to All

Opera Praktikos was founded to create opera productions and performances by artists of all abilities and for all audiences, and A Tempo takes a look at its history and upcoming production.

Opera Praktikos was founded in 2021 by Gregory Moomjy, who has cerebral palsy, and Marianna Mott Newirth after a chance meeting at a conference and discovering their mutual interest in opera. Since then, they have found ways to make adjustments so that artists with or without disabilities can perform, and they search out venues that are open and accessible to a wide range of audiences. Host Rachel Katz speaks with Newirth about the company and its upcoming double-bill matinee "There Will be Cake," featuring Lee Hoiby's Bon Appetit and Opera Praktikos's commissioned opera Fluffernutter by composer Spicer Carr and Libretto by Newirth, Dec. 12-14.

(Please note: an earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the company's co-founder as George Moomjy, not Gregory Moomjy)

Rachel Katz is the host of A Tempo which airs Saturdays at 7 pm.
