Radio Theater Includes 1940s Dramas Highlighting African-Americans in Upcoming Season

A Tempo Saturday (8/16) checks in with Radio on the Lake Theatre, which will perform several radio plays by African-American journalist Richard Durham this Fall.

From 1948 to 1950, writer and journalist Richard Durham produced a weekly radio drama called Destination Freedom, which told the stories of prominent African-Americans including Crispus Attucks, Harriet Tubman and Jackie Robinson. Some of his scripts will be featured in performance next month by Radio on the Lake Theatre as part of its Fall season as it seeks to add lesser heard voices to its line-up of productions.

A Tempo host Rachel Katz chats with theater co-founder and managing and artistic director Caroline Breder-Watts about Durham and his series, as well as the theater's other Fall productions, including Orson Welles's classic The War of the Worlds, and its programs that teach students and others the skills of audio drama.
