Since 2018, The Village Trip festival has sought to celebrate Greenwich Village's artistic and cultural legacy by showcasing the music, art and poetry - past and present - that was nurtured in the village, and the people who created it.
The festival typically features neighborhood tours exploring the district’s historical and cultural sights, lectures, comedy nights, art exhibitions and musical performances. Its programming expanded to include classical music performances in 2021. This year, its classical concerts include a performance by Poetica Musica of music by composers with village connections, including George Gershwin, Astor Piazzola, Charles Ives and Bela Bartok, a program of vocal poem settings curated by composer Victoria Bond, and the premiere of Five American Voices, a song cycle by Artist Emeritus David Amram. There will also be a weekend of programs devoted to the legacy of Leonard Bernstein.
A Tempo host Rachel Katz chats with Co-Founder and Executive Producer Liz Thomson, Amram, and Poetic Musica’s artistic director, Eleanor Valkenburg.
