In marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. this year and Interlochen's centennial in 2028, students at the renown arts school were encouraged to reflect on aspects of the past, present and future of both by using their art and creativity. The result is a concert program accompanied by interludes and other multidisciplinary elements created by students in the school's other creative divisions - theatre, visual arts, creative writing, dance, film and new media. Led by alumnus Cristian Măcelaru, The Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and Choir is touring Detroit, Philadelphia and Boston, where students will joined by other alumni from the respective city’s orchestra for the program featuring Reena Esmail’s “RE|member,” a reimagined performance of Charles Ives’s Symphony No. 4, and a new cello concerto by Wynton Marsalis with soloist Yo-Yo Ma.
A Tempo host Rachel Katz shares her conversations with Măcelaru, dramaturg and creative producer Diana Wyenn, violinist Annabelle Simboli, a senior, and sophomore jazz trumpeter DJ Parsons, discussing their experiences preparing for the tour.
