As curator, host and pianist with Pacific Symphony's Café Ludwig chamber music series, Orli Shaham has programmed works by the classic masters such as Beethoven and Brahms, as well as contemporary music, including pieces commissioned by the series. Two of these commissions are featured in Shaham’s latest release American Tapestry, which was recorded along with musicians from the series. All of the works are by living American composers and, in addition to the commissioned pieces by Avner Dorman and Margaret Brouwer, the album includes music by Jessie Montgomery, Sarah Kirkland Snider and Reena Esmail. A Tempo host Rachel Katz chats with Shaham about the recording, the chamber music series and the importance of bringing contemporary works to audiences.
