This week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys focuses on an acclaimed pianist and pedagogue whose artistry is all but unknown to American music lovers.
"Purely by chance I heard this fabulous recording of a Bach/Liszt transcription," recalled the Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler, who is Between the Keys' creator, producer and host. "Only after it was over did I learn the pianist's identity: Françoise Chaffiaud. Amazingly, I had never heard of her before, yet she's revered in the French piano community, and understandably so."
Jed contacted the pianist, and her agent responded by sending him a generous sampling of her CDs, from which Jed has chosen selections Mozart, Ravel and Schubert for this episode, along with the aforementioned Bach/Liszt Prelude and Fugue.
"In an era that worships youthful glamour and bravura, Françoise Chaffiaud's seasoned and very personal music making represents a kind of oasis. At 80, she's still going strong with performances and master classes, and we can all learn from her."
Tune in to Between the Keys this Tuesday night at 10, with a broadcast Wednesday at noon, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
