Concertos Under the Radar

On this week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler explores works for piano and orchestra that dwell off the standard repertoire's proverbial beaten path.

"It's astonishing how many wonderful concerted works with piano never seem to get attention in concert," says Jed. "For example, you always hear the second Saint-Saëns concerto, but never the third, which is equally excellent. Likewise, Edward MacDowell's Piano Concerto No. 2 gets played, but when does anyone ever hear No. 1? So for this episode I've planned to put the situation right."

Selections will include works by Dreyschock, Wiener, Dussek, MacDowell, Rubinstein, Saint-Saëns and Williamson.

Tune in to Between the Keys this Tuesday night at 10, with the rebroadcast Wednesday at noon, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
