For this week’s episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys. the Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler celebrates Beethoven’s 253rd birthday with two sonata performances that music lovers might not expect.
“People associate pianist Georges Cziffra with Liszt and his own crazy transcriptions, but hardly with Beethoven,” Jed says. “However, I think his ‘Appassionata’ Sonata recording is truly inspired and surprisingly stylish, yet no one ever talks about it. So I thought we could give Cziffra's 'Appassionata' a fair hearing. In addition, I’m including a very hard-to-find 2003 recording of the C Minor Sonata Op. 10 No. 1 in a brilliant performance by Georg Friedrich Schenck.”
