Rocky III

Sergei Rachmaninov provided two cadenza options for the first movement of his monumental Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor Op. 30: one light and one heavy. Though quite different in character, both are equally dramatic, virtuosic and demanding.

On this week’s episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler compares and discusses interpretations of both cadenzas in recorded performances by Van Cliburn, Valentina Lisitsa, Andrei Gavrilov, Grigory Sokolov, Vladimir Horowitz, Martha Argerich, Mirka Pokorna, Zoltan Kocsis and Sergei Rachmaninov himself.

Tune in to Between the Keys this Friday afternoon at 3:00, with the rebroadcast Saturday evening at 6:00, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org
