On this week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler presents an unlikely yet stimulating pairing of two seminal works involving keyboards and orchestra.
"I have no idea why I find a connection between Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor K. 491 and Steve Reich's Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards, other than the tonality of C Minor looming large over the music," Jed says. "Yet somehow this juxtaposition works to my ears. See what you think!"
The Mozart will be heard in the classic recording featuring pianist Glenn Gould, with Walter Susskind conducting the CBC Symphony Orchestra. Reich's Variations are presented in the premier studio recording with Edo de Waart leading the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra
Tune in this Friday at 3:00 PM, with the rebroadcast Saturday at 6:00 PM, only here on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
