88s on 78s

On this week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler presents rare piano recordings from the 78 RPM era, most of which have never been reissued in any long playing format.

"It's amazing just how many pianists recorded in the first half of the 20th century whose names and recordings are relatively obscure today, even unknown," Jed says. "As a long time collector of such recordings, I'm always happy to share such buried treasure with our listeners. After all, where else will you hear such things?"

Pianists include Julius Schendel, Walter Chapman, Denis Matthews, Tristan Risselin, Leslie England, Frank Merrick, Arnaud de Gontaut-Biron, Rosalyn Tureck, Mark Hambourg, Frank La Forge, Erno Balogh and Jacob Gimpel.

Tune in to Between the Keys this Friday afternoon at 3, with the rebroadcast Saturday evening at 6, only here on The Classical Network and WWFM.org
