“ Liszt is to the piano as Euclid is to geometry. Pianists turn to his music in order to discover the natural laws governing the keyboard. It is impossible for a modern pianist to keep Liszt out of his playing – out of his biceps, his forearms, his fingers – even though he may not know that Liszt is there, since modern piano playing spells Liszt.”
So wrote Liszt's biographer Alan Walker, and the music of this most influential and still-controversial composer will be the subject of this week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, hosted by The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler.
Featured pianists this hour will include Claudio Arrau, Sergio Fiorentino, Janina Fialkowska, Frederic Chiu, Michel Dalberto, Sviatoslav Richter, Jerome Rose, Jeffrey Swann, Lucille Chung, Grace A. Humphery and Alexandre Kantorow.
Tune in to Between the Keys this Friday at 3:00 PM, with the rebroadcast Saturday at 6:00 PM, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org
