For this week’s edition of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, The Classical Network’s Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler features recordings by three pianists: Percy Grainger, Magda Tagliaferro and Grete Scherzer.
“Grainger is one of the most fascinating characters in classical music,” Jed says. “I was fortunate to have heard all three of Tagliaferro’s ‘comeback’ recitals in New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But the few commercial recordings of Grete Scherzer I had not known about until recently. She was only 19 when she recorded the Schubert and Debussy selections we’ll hear this hour, yet the maturity and eloquence of her artistry beggars belief.”
Tune in to Between the Keys, this Friday at 3:00 PM, with the rebroadcast Saturday at 6:00 PM, exclusively on The Classical Network and WWFM.org.
