Two major works are featured on this week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, in recordings from an unlikely source.
"Remington Records was one of the first classical budget record labels of the early LP era," explains Between the Keys' creator, producer and host Jed Distler, who is The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence. "One often could find excellent performances by luminaries who had once been on major labels, such as pianists Ernst von Dohnanyi and Edward Kilenyi, plus violinist Albert Spalding."
Jed will offer recent digital remasterings of Dohnanyi and Spalding playing Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 1 and Kilenyi's Beethoven "Waldstein Sonata," along with a Brahms selection with pianist Etelka Freund, who was a close associate of Brahms, Liszt, Bartok and Kodaly.
"You'll be surprised how fresh and alive these interpretations still sound after more than 70 years. Besides, where else on the radio is there someone crazy enough to devote an hour to the long defunct and arguably obscure Remington label?"
