Although Katchen died tragically young at the age of 42, he left behind a prolific and potent artistic legacy of recordings. Generations of pianists imprinted on his spirited Brahms interpretations, while the verve and ebullience characterizing his Romantic and 20th-century repertoire still packs a punch.
