Glenn Gould (1932-1982) claimed to hate concertizing and, indeed, retreated from public performance in 1984 to concentrate on recordings, television, radio and film work.
Yet many live performances survive from Gould's international concertizing years, and reveal a more three-dimensional and arguably communicative musician than what we know from his commercial studio recordings.
On this week's episode of the ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award winning program Between the Keys, The Classical Network's Artist-in-Residence Jed Distler marks what would have been Gould's 94th birthday by presenting several live Gould performances released on CD: Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 3 (with cellist Leonard Rose), Richard Strauss' Burleske, and excerpts from Gould's signature piece, the Bach Goldberg Variations, live at the Moscow Conservatory.
