Der Rosenkavalier is a comic opera complete with a love triangle that includes a boorish old man, Baron Ochs, engaged to a much younger woman, Sophie, a trite well worn plot raised to new heights by the genius of Richard Strauss and his librettist, Hugo von Hofmannstahl. Sophie luckily falls for a young man, Octavian, and he for her. A complication is that Octavian is the lover of the much older Marschallin. But the Marschillan surrenders her lover to Sophie in one of the most beautiful finales in all of opera.
