This double-header concert broadcast brings together new compositions for guitar and music with a jazz/swing edge. The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo, comprised of festival founding artistic directors Laura Oltman and Michael Newman, welcomes guest guitarists - Brazilian João Luiz and Celil Refik Kaya from Turkey - for this program, which highlights selections for an upcoming new recording of recent commissions, including new music by Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec (New Jersey’s own), and Cuban legend Leo Brouwer, whose 85th birthday is being celebrated this spring.
The program also includes a performance by the Hot Club of Philadelphia, led by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli with its founding guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig. Inspired by the 1930s “Quintet of the Hot Club of France” in Paris, the ensemble shares its unique interpretations of Manouche (Romani) Jazz, aka “Gypsy Jazz,” Hot Jazz, and French Swing, along with Americana styles.
This concert program will be rebroadcast Saturday (7/20) at 2 pm.
