This performances featured in this broadcast originally took place in June 2024 as part of PRISM’s Generate Music program, which has just been released on the quartet’s XAS Records label. The inspiration for the project began with the music banned by the Nazis of Jewish composers and American jazz painted as ‘black music ‘ and then widened to examine the broader scope of the musical and social relationship between Jewish and African-American composers, musicians, artists, populations and cultures. New works were commissioned, and PRISM was joined by a super group of musicians, five of whom also were composers for this concert in a truly powerful, emotionally charged and deeply moving performance. PRISM member Matt Levy joined David Osenberg as co-host for this broadcast in January 2025, as well as the project’s co-curator, Helen Haynes past Chief Cultural Officer for Philadelphia and past Director of Exhibitions and Programs at the African-American Museum in Philly. Sadly, Helen passed away two months after the original broadcast.
Due to the three-hour length of this broadcast, the encore presentation will begin Saturday (8/15) at 1 pm.
