The Lyric Stage with Mike Harrah

Elizabeth Schwartzkopf heads the cast in a memorable Der Rosenkavalier.

In 1995, engineers and producers sat down with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf at the Abbey Road studios of EMI in London, to remaster her 1956 recording of Der Rosenkavalier for compact disc. The result is described as no a remastering, but a reengineering of that performance, originally supervised by Schwarzkopf's husband, Walter Legge, and it is always mentioned as one of the best recordings of Rosenkavalier available. This week we have highlights from that remastering. which also features Christa Ludwig and Teresa Stich-Randall, with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.
