Highlights from La Traviata this week on The Lyric Stage

Beverly Sills and Nicolai Gedda are featured in this recording from 1979 on The Lyric Stage this Sunday (7/24 at 8 pm).

La Traviata is based on the story by Alexander Dumas the son of a 19th century courtesan who is redeemed by the love of Alfredo. But Alfredo's father forces a break up to save the reputation of his family, only to realize his mistake too late as Violetta dies in the arms of Alfredo, who has returned to her side.

It is the world's most produced opera, and the cast for the highlights we have this week in this 1971 recording includes Beverly Sills as Violetta, Nicolai Gedda as Alfredo, and Rolando Panerai as the elder Germont. Aldo Cicatto conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the John Aldis Choir and a strong supporting cast.
