For three decades after her debut at Covent Garden in 1971 as the Countess in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, the New Zealand soprano Kiri Te Kanawa was a major figure on the world opera scene. Her roles covered much of the popular soprano repertoire - Puccini, Verdi, Gounod, Berlioz, Mozart, and others including the composer for tonight's show, Richard Strauss. And, like most opera singers, she loves to perform crossover, and so she'll sing some George Gershwin songs as well.
