A Songbook of Madrigals on What Makes it Great

Host Rob Kapilow reaches farther back in his songbook to works of Monteverdi in this broadcast Monday (11/18 at 8 pm) with an encore broadcast Saturday (11/23 at 2 pm).

In this first concert of Kapilow's 2024-25 season performed in Merkin Hall at the Kaufman Center in Midtown Manhattan, he welcomes the 12-singer vocal group Fourth Wall Ensemble to reach farther back with his Songbook format than he has gone before. The program features the madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi, the key transition figure from Renaissance to Baroque music. These compelling, deeply emotional choral works used music to illustrate the emotion of a work’s text in revolutionary ways that laid the groundwork for musical forms that still resonate today.
