This week’s Sunday Opera (7/12 3:00 p.m.) heads off to the Paris Opera for one of the world’s favorite operas, “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi. With a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, it was initially commissioned by the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo for an 1871 premiere. Quickly becoming an audience favorite, the opera has played around the world and has even played over 1,100 performances at the Metropolitan Opera since its debut in 1886.

Shakespeare seems to get credit for a great many things, but this time, he deserves it even if the quote is a bit “off.” We’re “Gilding the Lily” on this week’s Dress Circle (8/15 7:00 p.m.), well, we’ve amassed songs about beauty and its secrets, dressing to impress or excess, and a few make-up tips from a variety of musicals.

Today's Sunday Opera is from LA Opera and features Latonia Moore in the title role of Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida." Following the opera will be Mikis Theodorakis' Sinfonie No. 3 based on verse by 18th century Greek poet Dionysius Solomos.
