The Dress Circle: A Frank Wildhorn Broadway Songbook

b_wildhorn_montage_0.jpg

A ”songbook” of the Broadway works by Frank Wildhorn will air this Sunday (8/13 - 7:oo p.m.) on The Dress Circle.  Broadway audiences first heard the music of Wildhorn in 1997 when he added three songs, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, to the stage version of “Victor/Victoria” after the death of Henry Mancini.  Within two years, his first complete show and biggest hit “Jekyll & Hyde,” with book and lyrics by Bricusse, would be the talk of Broadway and go on to run for 1543 performances.

From there, his Broadway fortunes would begin to wane with none of the succeeding shows capturing the fire of the first.  Those shows included “The Scarlet Pimpernel” (772 perfs.), “The Civil War” (61 perfs.), “Dracula,The Musical” (157 perfs.), “Wonderland” ( 33 perfs.), and finally “Bonnie and Clyde" (36 perfs.).  During that time, he also began an international career and has created shows that have appeared in Switzerland, Japan, The Czech Republic, South Korea, and Vienna and more.  However, for this program, we’ll be concentrating only on his Broadway works.
