The Sunday Opera: Mozart's "Cosi fan Tutte" from the Lyric Opera

It’s a comic battle of the sexes on this week’s Sunday Opera (6/21 3:00 p.m.) with the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s production of Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte” from 2019.   A wager turns into a trial for sisters Fiordiligi (Ana Maria Martinez) and Dorabella (Marianne Crebassa) when Don Alfonso (Alessandro Corbelli) bets their fiances Ferrando (Andrew Stenson) and Guglielmo (Joshua Hopkins) that the sisters will never be faithful to them. The test involves the men masquerading as “Albanians” in order to woo the sisters and test them.

With the help of Despina the maid (Elena Tsallagoiva) who is bribed into service by Alfonso, the sisters fall in love, but it all ends happily when they forgive the men.  The conductor for this performance is James Gaffigan who leads the Lyric Opera of Chicago Chorus and Orchestra.   More music of Mozart is planned after the opera with a chamber ensemble arrangement of his Piano Concerto, No. 22 by Johann Hummel.

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
