This week’s Sunday Opera (7/19 3:00 p.m.) will be five-hours long with the Lyric Opera production of Richard Wagner’s “Die Walkure.” The second opera of the Ring cycle deals primarily with the relationship between brother and sister Siegmund and Siglinde whose love for each other angers the gods, so they are sentenced to death. However, one of Wotan’s warrior daughters, Brunhilde, helps Siglinde and the child she is carrying escape. Wotan then enacts his revenge on Brunhilde by stripping her of her immortality and placing her in a deep sleep upon a rock surrounded by a magic fire that is sure to keep her isolated.
Sir Andrew Davis conducts the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus and a cast that includes Brandon Jovanovich as Siegmund, Elisabet Strid as Siglinde, Eric Owens as Wotan, and Christine Goerke as Brunhilde. In the remaining time after the opera, until 8:00 p.m., join Michael Kownacky for music of Carl Nielsen and his Symphony No. 5.
