The Sunday Opera: Erich Korngold's "Die Kathrin"

Erich Wolfgang Korngold is best known for his film music, but on this week’s Sunday Opera (1/3 3:00 p.m.) we’ll hear some of his classical work including his romantic opera “Die Kathrin.”  Kathrin (Melanie Diener) falls in love with Francois (David Rendall), but life and various misunderstandings get between them until many years pass, and they can finally be together for a happy ending which we all need about now.  The cast includes Della Jones, Melanie Armistead, Lillian Watson, Robert Hayward, and Toby Spence with Martyn Brabbins conducting the BBC Singers and Concert Orchestra.  After the opera, we’ll have more music of Korngold including selections from a piece he wrote when he was eleven entitled “Der Schneemann” and his impressive Symphonic Serenade.

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
