The Sunday Opera: Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" with Beverly Sills

The Sunday Opera is once again traveling to Tudor England this week (5/16 3:00 p.m.) with Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic look at the fate of “Anna Bolena.”  Felice Romani’s libretto hurtles along to the ultimate death of the arguably best remembered wife of Henry VIII.   Our stellar cast of often forgotten singers in this 1973 recording includes Shirley Verrett as Jane Seymour, Stuart Burrows as Percy, Patricia Kern as Smeaton, Robert Lloyd as Rochefort, Robert Tear as Hervey, Paul Plishka as Henry, and Beverly Sills as Anna as one of the three Donizetti queens that energized her career. Stay tuned after the opera for more music of Donizetti including the overture to “Linda di Chaminoux” and the ballet suite from “La Favorite.”

Michael is program host and host of the WWFM Sunday Opera, Sundays at 3 pm, and co-host of The Dress Circle, Sundays at 7 pm.
