The Dress Circle: Spotlight on Jonathan Pryce

We’re shining a spotlight on Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce on this week’s Dress Circle (1/13 7:00 p.m.).  American audiences may know Pryce primarily from his appearance as The Engineer in “Miss Saigon” for which he won a Tony Award or his film appearances as Peron in “Evita,” Sam Lowry in “Brazil.”

His forty-seven-year career has seen him in everything from television dramas to feature films to highly acclaimed stage roles such as his 1980 performance as Hamlet.  We’ll be looking at his work in musicals, however, including The Engineer as well as Fagan in “Oliver!”, Higgins in the 2001 revival of “My Fair Lady,” and the 1992 concert version of Maury Yeston’s “Nine” where he led the company as Guido Contini.  We’ll also look at his work as the Emcee in a studio cast recording of “Cabaret” and as Peron in the film of “Evita” with Madonna.  Join us as we look at the work of this incredibly versatile performer whom you’ve probably seen many times but just didn’t realize it as he always makes the character he’s playing far more important than himself.
