We’re heading back to our English teacher roots on this week’s Dress Circle (11/17 7:00 p.m.) as we begin a series of programs we’ve titled “From Printed Page to Musical Stage.” Just about anything has been considered fodder as source material for musicals (with varying success), and there have been many that featured original books, but this program series will focus on those musicals based on works of literature in the form of novels, novellas, and short stories.
We have four literary works as source material on this first program as we look at the musical treatment of Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple,” Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan,” and P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins.” With songs from shows written for Broadway, Hollywood, and television, you'll hear some familiar and unfamiliar songs from these well-loved works.
