"No Alleluias: A Requiem for 2020" (US Premiere)
Marking five years since the coronavirus lockdown, Music at St. Peter’s presents the US premiere of “No Alleluias: A Requiem for 2020,” a powerful work for double choir, soprano soloist and organ. “No Alleluias” was composed by Dr. Anthony Hammond, now music director at St. Peter’s, for the 2021 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
“No Alleluias” combines the traditional Latin text of a requiem mass with English prose by Robert Rae. Rae was inspired by the writings of Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson, an American minister, as she lost her father to COVID-19 and herself became sick with the virus. “No Alleluias” pays respect to the extraordinary trauma of the pandemic and ensuing lockdown, but ends with hope for the future.
The work will be performed in observance of All Souls Day, traditionally a day of remembrance and prayer for those who have died. The service will be Nov. 2, at 5 pm, at St. Peter’s Morristown. There is no admission charge; a free-will offering will be taken.
