Program for Latinx Choreographers Expands Opportunities

Merilyn Garcia

A Tempo Saturday (7/1 at 7 pm) looks at Ballet Hispánico's Instituto Coreográfico, whose latest participant is the first with a physical disability to take part.

Since Ballet Hispánico launched its Instituto Coreográfico in 2010, it has worked with 16 Latinx choreographers, offering them mentorship and the opportunity to work with its dancers on one of the pieces they are developing. This year, the ballet company welcomed its first participant with a physical disability to the two-week program - dancer, choreographer and storyteller Mark Travis Rivera.

A Tempo host Rachel Katz speaks with Rivera and Ballet Hispánico Artistic Director and CEO Eduardo Vilaro about the institute, Rivera's own dance journey, and expanding opportunities in the dance world.

Rachel Katz is the host of A Tempo which airs Saturdays at 7 pm.
