Dance Company Brings 'Nutcracker' with a Jersey Twist to New Venues

Megan Maloy

A Tempo (11/22) kicks off its annual series exploring how some performing arts organizations are bringing a local or creative touch to classic holiday traditions with Nimbus Dance's Jersey Nutcracker.

Jersey City-based Nimbus Dance first staged its Jersey City Nutcracker, an updated version of the classic ballet set in the city, to local audiences in 2011. This year, the dance company has revised the show and will bring the now-renamed Jersey Nutcracker at two additional venues - Kean University's Wilkins Theatre and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. A Tempo host Rachel Katz speaks with the company's Artistic Director Samuel Pott about the process of imagining a Jersey setting for the plot and characters, some of the dance company’s other programs, and why the idea of the nutcracker has remained such a beloved holiday tradition.
