The Dress Circle: On the Way to Love

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, so on this week’s Dress Circle (2/12 7:00 p.m.), we’re going to take a look at love in the musicals. However. we’re only going to be looking at one aspect of “musical love.”

Love happens on the musical stage in several ways:

1. The couple are in love at the beginning of the show, and they have to face obstacles throughout in order to be together at the end.

2. One half of the couple loves the other and spends the evening trying to win the love of the other person.

3. The two people absolutely hate each other at the beginning of the show, but through a series of events, they start to like each other (against their wills), and that like turns into full-fledged love by the final curtain.

We’re going to look at the third couple this week in a program we’ve titled “On the Way to Love.”

There will only be two “hate” songs since there’s more than enough hate in the world right now. They come from “Kiss Me Kate” and “Destry Rides Again.”

Our “like” songs come from the stage version of “Doctor Dolittle,” “Drat the Cat,” and “She Loves Me.”

Of course, there are many, many love songs from which to choose, but we settled for six from musicals like “After the Ball,” “Pipe Dream,” and “They’re Playing Our Song.”

There are several others, and we hope you’ll join us this week to find out what they are.

Oh, and don’t forget to buy that special person in your life a Valentine, even if it’s yourself!
