The Dress Circle: Songs from TV Musicals - Part 3

We’re finishing our look at musicals written for television on this week’s Dress Circle (3/26 7:00 p.m.) once again with familiar and unfamiliar shows.

The familiar shows include Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” in its original 1957 version starring Julie Andrews and Jon Cypher and Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s one-woman show “Tell Me on a Sunday” which featured Marti Webb when it aired in 1980 and went on to become the basis for the stage show “Song and Dance.”

Less Familiar is Hugh Martin’s “Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates” which starred Tab Hunter, Peggy King, and Jarmila Novotna and aired in 1958.

The truly forgotten works this week include a Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt revue from 1961 entitled “New York Scrap Book.” From this, we’ll hear a medley by Kay Ballard, Kenneth Nelson, and Maureen Bailey.

We’ll be rounding out the program with two songs from two pretty much forgotten features. The first is by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans from 1959 and is about a young woman who’d rather fall in love with a rough trapper as opposed to the town dandy. It’s titled “You Can’t Tame Me.” We’ll also hear from 1966’s “The Canterville Ghost” by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick which was based on the story by Oscar Wilde and starred Michael Redgrave.

We promise another happy mix on this week’s program, and we hope you’ll tune in to share in the happiness.
