Annie and Jane are joining us for this week’s Dress Circle (6/25 7:00 p.m.); that’s Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane through eleven recordings from stage, screen, and studio casts of Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun” and Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster’s “Calamity Jane.”
Our “Annies” include the Broadway original, Ethel Merman, as well as other stage Annies such as Dolores Gray, Suzi Quattro, and Bernadette Peters along with Betty Hutton from the film version. We’ll also hear Judy Garland, Berlin’s first choice for a film Annie, and the song he wrote for her, “Let’s Go West Again.” Oh, we can’t forget Mary Martin as Annie from a television version of the show.
We have fewer Janes from which to choose, but we’ll hear the original film Jane, Doris Day, a Jane from a British stage production, Gemma Craven, and a studio cast recording, Debbie Gravitte.
