It’s August already, and we hope that your “summer” has been a happy one so far. Since this is the first program of the month, this week’s Dress Circle (8-6 7:00 p.m.) will be looking at a variety of musicals covering 121 years of theatre history.
This month’s survey begins with a show from 1902 entitled “Sally in Our Alley.” The show, which had a score by several composers and lyricists, may be extremely unfamiliar, but the song probably isn’t. We’ll listen to original cast member Marie Cahill sing “Under the Bamboo Tree.” Our most recent opening occurred only a few days before this program airs. A musical version of the hit film “Back to the Future” was a hit in London’s West End after opening in 2021 and is still playing there. It has come to Broadway with its original Doc Brown, Roger Bart.
Our playlist this month includes some more recent fare like “Hamilton,” but we’ll be looking at more older and probably forgotten shows including “Life Begins at 8:40,” “The Dream Girl,” “The Girl from Utah,” “Higher and Higher,” and Irving Berlin’s WWI “soldier musical,” “Yip Yip Yaphank.”
There’s more, but you’ll just have to tune in this Sunday to find out what else we’ve programmed. However, we guarantee that it’ll be an enjoyable mix of some excellent performances.
