The Dress Circle: Songs from the Shows of September 2023

We’re celebrating the musicals that opened in New York in September on this week’s Dress Circle (9/3 7:00 p.m.) in a program spanning 117 years of theatre history.

Our earliest musical is one by Victor Herbert and Henry Blossom. It’s “The Red Mill” which originally opened in 1906 and running for an astounding 274 performances. We’ll hear from a studio cast recording made in 1946 when the revival of “The Red Mill” was running for over 500 performances.

“Waitress,” our most recent musical, opened originally in 2016, running for over 1,500 performances, and reopening in September of 2021 after it was shut down by Covid and running for 122 performances more. We’re celebrating the show’s resilience in doing so well after its untimely closure.

We’ll hear from other popular shows like “Gypsy,” “Porgy and Bess,” “Song and Dance,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Follies,” and we’re happy to once again be offering songs from some shows you may have missed including “The Chocolate Soldier,” “The Great Waltz,” “The Student Gypsy,” “Fine and Dandy,” and “Irma la Douce.”

As always, it’ll be a wonderfully varied program, and we hope you’ll join us.
