The Dress Circle: "If You" Songs from the Musicals

We’re turning to the second phase of our “If Songs” from the musicals on this week’s Dress Circle (12/17 7:00 p.m.) with songs that begin with “If You.”

We loved looking for these songs in our database because it’s given us the chance to use some musicals that we’ve never had cause to use before, and we love bringing listeners some material with which they might not be that familiar.

Of course, we’ll have songs from shows you’re sure to recognize. These include Kander and Ebb’s “Cabaret,” “The Wiz” by Charlie Smalls, Cole Porter’s “Can-Can,” and a Warren and Gordon song from the MGM musical “Summer Stock” and one of our favorite songs performed by Judy Garland riding on a tractor!

Some of those forgotten musicals that came up in our search included the Styne, Comden & Green romp “Two on the Aisle,” the Schwartz and Fields musicalization of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” as well as Irving Berlin’s “Face the Music.”

We’ve also included some off-Broadway casts from “Inside Out” and “Little by Little.”

We’re rounding the program out with a song cut from a forgotten Kander and Ebb musical “The Happy Time,” a bit of fun from Sting’s “The Last Ship,” and we’ve even included one from an animated Christmas film about a cow that wants to be on Santa’s team titled “Annabelle’s Wish.”

Although we’re generally pleased with our playlists, this one really made us feel good because we were able to use songs from Broadway, off-Broadway, and Hollywood, and the resulting variety made us very happy. Take a break and join us this week.
