The Dress Circle: Songs from the Shows of January 2024

This week’s Dress Circle (1/7 7:00 p.m.) welcomes January (and 2024). Since we’ve already had our New Year’s program, we’ll focus on musicals that opened in New York this month.

There hasn’t been a Broadway opening in January since 2015, but we have one this year. It’s the Broadway transfer of Adam Guettel’s adaptation of “Days of Wine and Roses” which will open on 1/28 starring Kelly O’Hara and Brian D’Arcy James. We’ll begin however, with our oldest show which opened in 1887, was a huge hit, and was revived several times to great success. The show is titled “The Old Homestead,” and although it wasn’t really a musical by today’s standards, it contained many existing songs that were interpolated into the proceedings.

This means that we’re looking at some 137 years of Broadway history.

As always, you’ll hear a mix of familiar and unfamiliar pieces, but we still guarantee an hour of happy listening.

Some of those familiar musicals include “The Little Mermaid,” “Beautiful, the Carole King Musical,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “Sweet Charity,” and “Finian’s Rainbow.”

On the “lesser” side, we’ve included “Darling of the Day,” “Mexican Hayride,” and “Shenandoah.”

Of course, there’s more, but you’ll just have to tune in to find out what we’ve included this year!
