Quite often, many of the incredible composers and lyricists who made the American musical the unique artform that it is are overlooked, and we’re celebrating one of those people on this week’s program (1/14 7:00 p.m.) as we look at fifteen songs from six Broadway shows with lyrics by E.Y. Harburg.
Harburg was a remarkable lyricist who was able to intertwine social commentary and criticism with some of the cleverest lyrics to appear on the stage – besides being a great deal of fun.
The six shows at which we’ll be looking are “Finian’s Rainbow” which Harburg wrote with Burton Lane, “Bloomer Girl” and “Jamaica” written with Harold Arlen, “The Happiest Girl in the World” based on the catalogue of songs by Jacques Offenbach, “Darling of the Day” with music by Jule Styne, and the legendary “Flahooley” which he wrote with Sammy Fain.
Some of our performers include Lena Horne, David Wayne, Patricia Routledge, Cyril Ritchard, Josephine Premice, Obba Babatunde, Vincent Price and many more.
Join us and sing along with songs about freedom, nuclear war, lust, modern conveniences, and ultimate happiness while celebrating a fabulous talent.
