The Dress Circle: Songs from the Shows of June

The pearl is the birthstone for June, and we'll be offering up some musical pearls on this week's program.

June has never been a good month for Broadway musical openings, but we’re going to do our best to celebrate June on this week’s Dress Circle (6/2 7:00 p.m.).

Our earliest opening comes in the form of a song from the 1909 edition of the “Ziegfeld Follies.” It’s the very popular (in her day) Eva Tanguay singing her signature song “I Don’t Care.”

Oh, this may be the best time to let you know that we’re featuring several early songs on this week’s program. We found it necessary because there really are so few openings in June, and we really don’t like to repeat them from year to year unless we really have to do so. We’ve done our best to clean-up the sound, but some of these recordings, like the Tanguay, are well over 100 years old.

With that said, the most recent opening we have once again is from 2011. It’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” There were two shows that have opened since then, but neither one had a cast recording.

Some of the earlier shows include “Hitchy-Koo of 1917,” “George White’s Scandals of 1926,” “The Band Wagon” from 1931, and another “Ziegfeld Follies,” this one from 1917.

Some of the other shows include “Seventeen,” “Grease,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Pal Joey.”

We can really guarantee a mix of familiar and unfamiliar songs on this week’s program, so we’re hoping you’ll join us.
