It’s the beginning of another month, so we’re showcasing some of the musicals that opened in that month, a.k.a. September, on this week’s Dress Circle (9/1 7:00 p.m.) as we look at a dozen musicals spanning 123 years of Broadway history.
September has been a slow month for some time, a sort of “in-between” summer and fall/winter holidays, so it seems that shows don’t generally like to open in the calm because there hasn’t been an opening in September since the resurfacing of “Waitress” in 2021 after its Covid closure. We’re bookending that with the overture from a Victor Herbert / Harry B. Smith operetta that opened in 1898, “The Fortune Teller.”
We’ve done some digging for the rest of the playlist to try to bring you some lovely songs from forgotten shows, and to that end, you’ll hear from “Magdalena,” “Flying Colors,” “Rob Roy,” “Lieber Augustin,” “Dearest Enemy,” “At Home Abroad,” and “Tale of Two Cities. Of course, we’ll also hear from some familiar works like “The Boy Friend,” “Evita,” and “West Side Story” for good measure as well.
As always, we’ve done our best to bring you a variety of wonderful music that we hope will entertain and introduce you to something you might not have known before. In any event, it’s an enjoyable hour of listening.
