We’re beginning October with our regular feature as we look at a baker’s dozen songs from some of the musicals opening this month on this week’s Dress Circle (10/6 7:00 p.m.). Our final playlist covers 121 years of Broadway history.
We’re beginning in 1903 with the opening of “Babes in Toyland” by Victor Herbert and Glen MacDonough and moving on to the second Broadway revival of “Sunset Boulevard” by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Christopher Hampton, and Don Black. This British transfer is the most “recent” opening and will open on October 20th of this year.
Those musicals making up the “filler” between these two include “Porgy and Bess,” “Henry, Sweet Henry,” “Lost in the Stars,” “Golden Boy,” “Pickwick,” “Big Fish,” and the month’s big winner, “Wicked.”
We’re turning to vocalists such as Kenny Baker, Mary Martin, Ethel Waters, Billy Daniels, Joan McCracken, Todd Duncan, Kristen Scott, Norbert Leo Butz, Kristen Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, and a knockout performance from Alice Playten.
With songs by Gershwin, Weill, Arlen, Strouse, Lippa, Schwartz, and Merrill, it’s sure to prove another memorable evening, and we hope you’ll join us.
