If you hadn’t noticed, July just happened recently. To welcome it on this week’s Dress Circle (7/6 7:00 p.m.), we’re looking at some of the musicals that have opened in New York this month. We don’t have an exhaustive list, but we were still able to amass a baker’s dozen of songs that span 157 years of musical history.
We’re beginning with the overture to a Jacques Offenbach operetta entitled “Barbe-Bleue” which opened in 1867. Our most recent song comes from the 2023 musical about Imelda Marcos, “Here Lies Love.’
As usual, the rest of the playlist includes familiar works like “Avenue Q,” “Moulin Rouge,” “Fiddler on the Roof” (Herschel Bernardi), “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “Xanadu” as well as forgotten and lesser-known musicals like “Show Girl,” “Yokel Boy,” “The Passing Show of 1912,” and “The Greenwich Village Follies of 1919.”
We’ve even programmed a song from “Head Over Heels,” the 2018 jukebox musical that mined the music of the most successful female rock group in music history, The Go-Go’s.
Join us, and escape for an hour of varied and interesting songs with a little bit of theatre history thrown in just for fun.
